A young man has an affair with an older woman. He is envious of her husband and decides that they should murder him. They strangle the husband and dump his body down a well one night after he had drunk a lot of sake and was in bed. To allay any suspicions, she pretends her husband has left for work in Tokyo. For three years, the wife and her lover have been secretly seeing each other. Finally, suspicions grow to be very strong, and people begin to gossip. To make matters worse, her husband's ghost begins to haunt her, and the police arrive to investigate her husband's disappearance.
