After being widowed, Frank Fogle reluctantly embarks on a journey to fulfill his wife's final desire of scattering her ashes in a lonely lake in her native Ireland, with the promise of bringing his estranged son, Sean, along. Sean is fresh out of prison, and the last thing on his mind is a cross-country road trip with his estranged father. What he requires is a new beginning in California. When his travel plans fall through, he reluctantly accepts his father's proposal in exchange for a ticket to the West Coast and the promise that they will never have to see each other again. With a disturbing Irish wake, the reappearance of an old flame, the pick-up of a pretty hitchhiker, and a slew of unresolved issues, the journey becomes a little more than father and son bargained for.
