The mysterious Makinami Mari Illustrous and the intense Asuka Langley Shikinami are two new EVA pilots introduced by the United Nations Special Agency NERV to help protect the metropolis of Tokyo-3, which is under continual attack by horrific beings known as Angels that wish to eliminate civilization. Meanwhile, Gendo Ikari and SEELE continue working on a top-secret project involving both Rei and Shinji. For the DVD/Blu-ray release, the film was renamed "Evangelion: 2.22."
