As Ned (Liev Schreiber) approaches middle age, his life is in turmoil. As a writer on an outlandish, semi-pornographic television show, his work is not enjoyable. In the last week, his fifteen-year-old son has revealed to him that he is gay, and his eleven-year-old son is terrified of, well, pretty much anything. He and his wife, Jeannie (Helen Hunt), are already on the brink of divorce when her father, Brian Dennehy (Brian Dennehy), moves in with them from Detroit. It's only when an attractive coworker (Carla Gugino) flirts with Ned that he begins to spiral out of control. All of us face the inevitable challenges of aging, mortality, commitment, and acceptance in our daily lives, and this is the story of one family's attempt to deal with them.
