Izzy Jonigkeyt, a Chassidic Jew from Crown Heights, goes to San Francisco to visit Marek Wisniewski, who was born in Poland and is now a Catholic. He wants to find out why Bay Area art-world iconoclast Harry Kierk wants to destroy a lifetime's worth of his own work, so he visits Wisniewski. As the visit goes on, Izzy and Marek learn for the first time that complicated historical baggage is getting in the way of their curious friendship. Soon, they start to understand why Kierk is so driven to destruction. Marek's cousin, Irek, is a little bit anti-Semitic, but he is the only way for Marek and Kierk to get in touch with each other.
