In 1893, a young man flees Ireland with his landlord's daughter following a dispute with the girl's father; they hope to win land in Oklahoma's major giveaway. When they arrive in the new country, they obtain employment and start saving money. The man becomes a local barehands boxer and rides in glory until he is defeated. His employers then steal all of the couple's money, and they are forced to fend off famine in the winter while attempting to maintain their dream of owning land. In the meantime, the woman's parents discover her whereabouts and travel to America to get her.
