FAREWELL is a sophisticated and extremely intelligent thriller plucked from the pages of history—about an ordinary man catapulted into the Cold War's largest data theft. Ronald Reagan referred to this mostly overlooked chapter of history as "one of the twentieth century's most significant espionage instances." The story of FAREWELL begins in 1981, following the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Pierre Froment (Guillaume Canet), a French businessman stationed in Moscow, strikes an odd alliance with Grigoriev (Emir Kusturica), a top KGB officer unhappy with the state of the Communist ideal under Brezhnev. Grigoriev begins transmitting highly classified material to Froment on the Soviet intelligence network operating in the United States.
