Made throughout Bergman's tax-related expatriation in Germany, the film continues the tale of Katarina and Peter Egermann, the feuding, childless, expert couple who appear in one episode of "Scenes From A Marriage." After Peter commits a horrible crime in its very first scene, the rest of the movie consists of a non-linear assessment of his inspirations, incorporating an authorities emotional examination, scenes from the Egermanns' wedded life, and dream series.
