Duffy Bergman, a New York cartoonist, meets Meg Lloyd, a gourmet chef, and they marry— but love alone isn't enough to make them happy. Meg makes the decision to have a kid, which initially frightens Duffy but quickly becomes his top priority. When they are unable to conceive a child, Meg focuses on her profession, and the two gradually drift apart, eventually splitting. Duffy confesses later, while speaking at a Delta Gamma sorority conference, that the Delta Gamma females have always been his ideal girls— his Love Goddesses. There he meets Daphne Delillo, a youthful and exuberant Delta Gamma girl. Their mutual connection and Daphne's spontaneity inspire an intriguing new relationship for Duffy when she goes to New York to work as a network sports writer. Now Duffy must choose between the connection he has given up and the relationship he has always desired.
