The final trial of Bryon De La Beckwith, the assassin of civil rights hero Medgar Evers in the 1960s, is shown in Ghosts of Mississippi. It starts with the murder and the circumstances leading up to the two first trials, both of which resulted in a hung jury. The film then follows Bobby DeLaughter, the District Attorney, as he undergoes a change and forms an alliance with Myrlie Evers, the wife of Medgar Evers, as he becomes increasingly involved with bringing Beckwith to trial for the third time 30 years later. Some of the characters in this story are played by real people.
