Harbinger Down

A group of graduate students has reserved passage on the fishing trawler Harbinger in order to conduct research on the effects of global warming on a pod of Orcas in the Bering Sea. When the ship's crew unearths a piece of newly thawed Soviet space junk, things become downright dangerous. The Russians appear to have experimented with tardigrades, small robust creatures capable of withstanding the extremes of space radiation. The animals persisted, but with mutations. Now the crew is in risk of being infected by aggressively mutating microbes. And after three decades of being imprisoned in ice, the creatures are not about to give up the comfort of human contact.
