Hard to Be a God
A team of scientists is dispatched to the planet Arkanar to assist the native civilisation, which is in its own Middle Ages, in finding the appropriate road to progress. Their mission is challenging: they cannot intervene aggressively and must never kill. The scientist Rumata cannot avoid taking a stance as he attempts to spare the local intellectuals from their punishment. As if the inquiry were: what would you do if you were God? Director's declaration Aleksei has always desired to make this film. The path was lengthy. This is a film about love, not about cruelty. A love that was present, palpable, and vibrant, and that endured the most difficult circumstances.
