Behrani, an Iranian immigrant, purchases a California house with the intention of fixing it up, reselling it, and making enough money to send his son to college with the proceeds. Kathy, a former drug addict, owns the house, which is her legal residence. She is displaced after losing her home in an unfair legal struggle with the county, and she has nowhere else to turn. She employs a lawyer and forms a friendship with a police officer in order to regain possession of her home. Due to the fact that neither Kathy nor Behrani has breached the law, they find themselves in the middle of a severe moral quandary.
