Philip arrives at the Usher estate in search of Madeline after a long journey. A mystery illness has struck Madeline and her brother Roderick Usher, causing Roderick to become extremely acute and Madeline to become catatonic. An historical Usher family curse has it that whenever there is more than one Usher child, all of the siblings go insane and die. The curse's consequences grow more horrific as the days pass.
