It Was a Faint Dream
Set in 13th-century Kyoto, when the clergy govern the Imperial court. Shijo was a poor girl who was sold as a concubine to a powerful daima. She begins an affair with a State Councillor and the brother of a retired Emperor, bored with her life in isolation. Recognizing that she is merely a courtesan's toy, she becomes a nun and explores the countryside.
