Ithaca

Homer Macauley is 14 years old and lives in a small town in California's San Joaquin Valley. He wants to be the best and fastest bicycle telegraph messenger anyone has ever seen! This means his older brother is away at war, leaving Homer to look after his widowed mother. He also has an older sister and a 4-year-old brother called Ulysses. As spring turns to summer in 1942, Homer Macauley sends messages of love, hope, pain, and death to the people of Ithaca through the mail. This is how Homer Macauley will handle one message that will change him for good. ITHACA is based on William Saroyan's 1943 book, The Human Comedy, which won him the Pulitzer Prize. It is the quintessential wartime story of the Home Front. In this story, a young girl grows up and learns about things like the joys of youth, the sweetness of life, and the pain of death. She also learns about the modesty and sheer goodness that each and every one of us has.
