An elderly man and his last remaining relative in a rural French village cast covetous eyes on an adjacent vacant property. They require its spring water to grow their flowers and are disappointed to learn that the man who inherited it is moving in. They clog the spring and watch as their new neighbor struggles to keep his crops watered from far-flung wells during the hot summer. Despite the fact that his desperate efforts are destroying his health and breaking his wife and daughter's hearts, they are only concerned with getting the water.
