When Picard (Del Toro) comes back home from the war, he starts having strange symptoms that don't make sense. The film is based on Georges Devereux's 1951 book, "Psychotherapy of a Plains Indian." He goes to the Winter Hospital in Topeka, Kansas, where he meets Devereux (Amalric). They start a friendship that is both professional and personal, based on compassion and understanding of Native American cultures.
