On the final day of World War I, Joe, a young American soldier, gets wounded by a mortar shell. An amputee, he has lost all of his limbs and all of his senses - he has lost both his hands and both of his feet. Without realizing it, even his physicians are baffled as to how this man is still alive and capable of reasoning. He has no way of knowing whether he is awake or dreaming. On one occasion, though, Joe comes up with a novel approach to interact with his caregivers.
