The Iraqi insurgency in the Polish zone began on Ashura Day, April3,2004, when militants loyal to Shiite leader Muktada As-Sadr launched an attack. City Hall was defended by a team of Poles, Bulgarian soldiers, and Iraqi police led by Lieutenant Colonel Grzegorz Kaliciak. Since World War II, this has been Poland's most significant military conflict since. A counterattack killed roughly 80 rebels, but no allied soldiers perished.
