King Rat
When Singapore was captured by the Japanese in1942, the Allied prisoners of war (POWs), the most of whom were British but also included a few Americans, were imprisoned in Changi jail. There were no walls or barbed-wire fences since there was nowhere for the inmates to run to if they wanted to get away. The American Cpl. King, a wheeler dealer who has managed to make a comfortable living for himself in the camp, is among the detainees. While the majority of the prisoners are on the verge of famine and their uniforms are in tatters, King eats well and has fresh, clean clothes to wear on a consistent basis. King quickly develops a connection with Lt. Peter Marlowe, an upper-class British officer who is taken aback by King's vivacity and enthusiasm for everything.
