At the start of the Meiji period, the Gokumonjou, an impossible-to-escape prison, was built in the middle of a huge lake to stop the rise in crime that the new era brought. The famous Kumou brothers, Tenka, Soramaru, and Chuutarou, are the ferrymen. Tenka is the strange family head, Soramaru is the reckless but noble second son, and Chuutarou is the naive youngest brother. Even though they do sad jobs, the three live relatively peaceful lives in the always cloudy town of Oumi with their housekeeper, Shirasu Kinjou. But buried in the long history of Oumi is the story of the terrifying "Orochi," a serpentine beast that wakes up every 300 years in a human body. Soramaru and Chuutarou don't know it, but the Kumou family's real job is to seal the Orochi away before it fully comes back to life, or else the world will be destroyed. When the monster comes back to life, the Kumou family must find the strength to keep laughing under the clouds.
