Charley Thompson, a teen living with his single father, accepts a summer job with horse trainer Del Montgomery. Charley forms a bond with an aging racehorse named Lean on Pete and is horrified to learn that he is destined for slaughter, so he steals the horse and the two set out on an odyssey across the new American frontier.
