When the Gold Cup hydroplane boat race unexpectedly comes to his little town of Madison, Indiana, in 1971, air-conditioner repairman and boat enthusiast Jim McCormick entertains his wish to 'go down in history' as a legend in the record books. Jim jumps at the chance to enter the contest as soon as it presents itself. As Jim works on his old boat with the help of a motley gang of fellow mechanics and friends, the city of Detroit is given new life and a new lease on life. Sujit R. Varma wrote the article.
