Magnificent Obsession
A local hero, Dr. Wayne Phillips, is killed when his speed boat is destroyed by a churlish, selfish rich guy named Bob Merrick. The rescue crew resuscitates Merrick with equipment that is otherwise unavailable to save Dr. Phillips. The secret to Phillips' success was to give selflessly and in secret, and when Merrick discovers Phillips' secret, he attempts it in an amateurish manner.
