When fur trappers and Indian traders first returned to civilization in the early 1800s, they did so in a desperate effort to beat the approaching winter. Zachary Bass, a guide, was injured in a bear assault and they decided to leave him to die. When he recovers instead, he vows revenge on them and pursues them and their paranoid expedition commander.
