In the sixteenth century, the Spanish Inquisition captured Miguel de Cervantes, a poet, dramatist, and occasional performer, along with his manservant. They are accused of providing offensive entertainment to the Inquisition. Inside the vast dungeon into which they have been cast, the other prisoners gang up on Cervantes and his manservant and launch a fake trial with the purpose of stealing or torching his things. Cervantes desperately wants to save a manuscript he carries with him, so he stages, with costumes, makeup, and the cooperation of the other inmates, an unconventional defense: the Don Quixote story.
