a scene from Paris in the early twentieth century Affluent Marguerite Dumont has a passion for music and the opera, which she shares with her daughter, Marguerite. She has been entertaining a small group of people on a regular basis for years. However, no one has ever told Marguerite that she sings dreadfully out of tune until now. Her husband and close friends have always supported her in her deluding herself into believing in herself. Things become extremely problematic the day she gets the idea that she wants to perform in front of a real audience, at the Opera House in New York.
