A story about the unexpected connection that develops between Mary, an isolated young girl of eight years old who lives in the suburbs of Melbourne, and Max, a middle-aged man who is morbidly obese and lives in New York. In the middle of the 1970s, a plain and unsocial Australian girl of eight years old chooses a name at random from a phone book in Manhattan and writes to him. She also sends him a chocolate bar. He responds to your letter with chocolate. This is the beginning of a correspondence that will last for twenty years. Will they ever have to deal with one another face to face?
