Hally is a white South African adolescent who is the subject of this film. Currently, he is trapped between the expectations of his bigoted father and the expectations of his caregiver, Sam. Besides being Hally's companion and teacher, Sam is a black waiter in the restaurant. Unlike his father, who forces Hally to laugh at racist remarks, Sam exposes Hally to uplifting situations. Hally's father humiliates him one day, and Sam teaches Hally how to be proud of what he has accomplished on his own time.
