The date: 1814. Place: Edo, now called Tokyo. Tetsuzo was a well-known artist in his time, and now he's in his 50s, he has clients from all over Japan. He works hard in the garbage-filled mess of his house-atelier. A 180 square meter-wide piece of paper shows a huge Bodhidharma on it. A pair of sparrows are painted on a tiny rice grain, and so on and so forth. A 23-year-old woman named O-Ei is one of four daughters Tetsuzo had. O-Ei is the third of Tetsuzo's four daughters. O-Ei was born in his second marriage. There are times when her art is so strong that it can get her into trouble. I think we can always get by with two brushes and four chopsticks. We are father and daughter.
