Mr. Jones

Gareth Jones, a Welsh journalist, travels by train from Moscow to Kharkov, Ukraine, in March 1933. He disembarks at a little station and proceeds on foot on a tour into the countryside, where he witnesses the miseries of starvation firsthand. Everywhere he goes, he finds henchmen of the Soviet secret service determined to keep news of the disaster from reaching the general population. Stalin's strategy of forced collectivization of agriculture has ended in suffering and destruction; it is akin to mass murder. With the help of New York Times reporter Ada Brooks, Jones is able to spread the shocking news throughout the West, putting his powerful rival, Pulitzer Prize-winning, pro-Stalin journalist Walter Duranty, in his place.
