Edouard is the patriarch of a huge family; his second wife, Jeanne, has recently given birth to their child and has had it up to here with his extramarital affairs. Edouard's girls are going through their own individual emotional upheavals while their parents' marriage is falling apart. Dina, who is in a relationship with the playwright Paul, yearns for more from her day-to-day existence, but Sidone, who is married to a fellow musician but cannot stand the thought of performing in front of an audience, is petrified of doing so. Seven years later, Edouard is diagnosed with a terminal illness, and the family discusses their problems, hopes, and anxieties regarding his prognosis.
