North Sea Texas
Pim Bulteel and his mother Yvette Bulteel reside in a dilapidated house on a dead-end street somewhere along the Flanders coast. Cold French fries, cheap cigarettes, vermouth, and stale beer are the aromas of everyday life in this town. Mother Yvette employs her friend Etienne, who drives a dreadful grey Fiat, as a chauffeur during the nights she is required to "act." Pim imagines herself as a princess or a beauty queen when she is a child, and her dreams come true. However, when Pim reaches the age of sixteen, he begins to fantasize about Gino, the attractive boy next door. From the time they were children, there has been a constant state of tension between them. Gino is now Pim's hero in the world of motorcycles. Pim's existence is made up of cold ridicule, minor humiliations, and a few glimmers of hope here and there. That he occasionally escapes to his dream world is understandable.
