The kidnapping and murder of seven monks in Algeria in 1996 inspired this French movie. In the Algerian monastery of Tibhirine, a number of Trappist monks live in peace with the predominantly Muslim people. When the tranquility is disrupted by a deadly struggle between Algeria's army and Muslim Jihadi terrorists, they are forced to consider quitting the monastery and abandoning the villages they have served. Faced with terrible bloodshed, the monks debate their religion and values before opting to stay and assist their neighbors in keeping the army and insurgents at bay.
