Frank Redmond, a no-nonsense 55-year-old working-class man, has been laid off after decades of working as a Glasgow shipbuilder. He is without a job or a sense of direction for the first time in his life, and he is too proud to seek advice. Frank's best friends, rascally Danny, timid Norman, and cynical Eddie, are there for him, but he still feels very alone. Danny's casual remark inspires Frank to put himself to the test. Frank is already thinking about the state of his relationships with his loving wife Joan and his nearly estranged son Rob, and he's determined to boost his own self-esteem. He intends to attempt the near-impossible feat of swimming the English Channel.
