Alexander, 11, lives in an isolated commune on the outskirts of a crumbling city with other children, their mothers, and the charismatic leader, Gregori. Gregori teaches the children how to keep livestock, grow vegetables, and work cooperatively – and also how to kill. Alexander begins to doubt Gregori's overbearing effect on the children and their training to be assassins as the birth of a new baby sibling weighs on his thoughts. Threatened by his growing refusal to conform, Gregori's behavior becomes erratic and antagonistic toward the youngster he once called a son. With the two at conflict and the commune's way of life collapsing, many believe a violent resolution is imminent.
