Paulie

One of Paulie's struggles is told to a Russian immigrant who works as a janitor at the research center where the parrot is housed and neglected. Paulie is an intellectual parrot who can truly communicate with his human companions. It is several years before Paulie's narrative begins that he is given as a present to a small girl who stutters, and his story continues from there. Eventually, he succeeds in teaching the girl how to speak properly, but he is removed from the scene by her father, who believes the daughter is unable to discern imagination from reality because she believes the bird can communicate. Throughout the film, Paulie encounters many characters such as a pawn shop owner, an elderly widow, a Mexican-American troubadour, and a would-be burglar, all of whom help him on his journey to the institute where he is currently housed.
