Reaching for the Moon

Elizabeth Bishop, a poet from New York, decides to pay her friend Mary, who went to school with her, a visit in Rio de Janeiro in the year 1951. Elizabeth, who is often reserved, is overcome by the seductiveness of the Brazilian culture. She is the antithesis of Mary's partner, the architect Lota de Macedo Soares, who is dashing and sophisticated. Both Elizabeth and the poet eventually give in to Lota's advances, despite the poet's icy demeanor at initially. The architect quickly makes a move on Elizabeth. Mary is green with envy, but unusual Lota is resolute in his pursuit to have both women no matter what it takes. When Lota begins work on what will be her most significant project to date, the design of Parque do Flamengo in Rio, their ménage à trois is thrown off balance. As a result of Elizabeth's decision to take a teaching position in the United States, the women become increasingly apart from one another. Lota, who exudes an abundance of self-assurance at all other times, cannot be consoled in this circumstance. The events of this eternal triangle take place against the backdrop of the military takeover that occurred in 1964. The stirring poetry of Bishop are at the heart of a film that vividly shows a pivotal period in the life of a renowned and Pulitzer Prize–winning poet named Bishop.
