During the Sino-Japanese war that began in1939, Sakura Nishi is a young army nurse who is assigned to work in one of the field hospitals in China. She is required to offer assistance to the surgeon, Dr. Okabe, in the performance of an unprecedented number of amputations. She shows some of the injured service members compassion in the overcrowded wards, and she even provides sexual services to one of the troops who has lost both arms and has given up hope of ever going home. She develops romantic feelings for Dr. Okabe and decides to accompany him to the front lines, despite the fact that his morphine addiction has rendered him impotent.
