Maziar Bahari, an Iranian-Canadian journalist working for Newsweek in 2009, was reporting Iran's tumultuous elections. He made an appearance on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, where he conducted a filmed interview with comedian Jason Jones. He is one of the few foreign journalists living in the country who has access to American media. The interview was meant to be satirical, but if the Tehran authorities caught on to the joke, they didn't appreciate it - and it came back to haunt Bahari when he was dragged from his family home and imprisoned. This powerful and affecting docudrama, directed by Jon Stewart in his directorial debut, tells the story of Bahari's months-long imprisonment and interrogation, which features a powerful and moving performance by Gael Garca Bernal. The film chronicles Bahari's efforts to maintain his hope and mental stability in the face of isolation and persecution-through memories of his family, recollections of the music he loves, and thoughts about his wife and unborn child.
