Lakshmi is a thirteen-year-old Nepalese girl who lives in a small hut on a mountain with her family. When the Himalayan monsoons wash away the family's crops, Lakshmi's father tells her she must leave home and seek employment to feed her family. He introduces her to a gorgeous stranger who promises to find her work in the city as a maid. Lakshmi, overjoyed to be able to assist, travels to India and arrives at "Happiness House" full of hope.
