In 2199, five years after the Gamilons started to take over Earth, their bombs have done a lot of damage. The last people have gone underground to get away from the radioactive surface. One day, Susumu Kodai, a former pilot, finds a capsule from the planet Iscandar that talks about a machine that can remove radiation from the surface of the Earth. In order to make the 148,000-light-year trip to Iscandar and save the Earth, the Earth Defense Force rebuilds the battleship Yamato with a new type of propulsion system. Within a year, the radiation will kill off everyone else on Earth.
