In2001, The Boston Globe's editor Marty Baron hires a team of journalists to examine charges against John Geoghan, an unfrocked priest accused of assaulting more than 80 boys. Reporters Michael Rezendes, Matt Carroll, and Sacha Pfeiffer, led by editor Walter "Robby" Robinson, interview victims and strive to unseal important records. The reporters make it their duty to uncover evidence of sexual abuse cover-ups within the Roman Catholic Church.
