Sir William Hamilton is the British ambassador to the Court of Naples. He is a widower of old age and has been married for many years. If Emma were in London, she wouldn't be able to fit in. The Queen of Naples likes her. Her life goes well until Lord Nelson comes to visit; after that, things start to go wrong for Emma. At first, Sir William lets his young wife have a fling and pretends not to know what is going on. That isn't true for the real-life lovers, though. They have even more passion for each other in this movie than they did in "Fire Over England" (1937).
