In this dramatic adaptation of Irvine Stone's novel directed by Carol Reed, Charlton Heston appears as Renaissance artist Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni (6 March 1475 – 18 February1564), who reluctantly paints the Sistine Chapel for autocratic Pope Julius II. While the literature chronicles Michelangelo's life from birth to death, the film centers on the clash of wills between the fastidious artist and the impatient Pope who commissions (and ultimately commands) him to paint the iconic chapel.
