Cable is duped and left without water in the desert after being betrayed. When Hogue comes across a spring, he is saved. It is in an ideal location for a much-needed rest station on the local stagecoach line, and Hogue takes full advantage of the situation. He builds a residence and earns money from the stagecoach travelers that come to see him. Hildy, a prostitute from the next town, comes to live with him and becomes his roommate. Hogue seemed to have everything working in his favor until the invention of the vehicle brings the era of the stagecoach to an end.
