The film is shot in the Kabuki style and portrays the narrative of a lonely mountain town where food scarcity forces relatives to bring 70-year-old family members up Narayama mountain to die. Granny Orin is almost 70 years old and pleased with her lot in life. Tatsuhei, her widower son, is unable to handle the loss of his mother, despite the fact that she arranges for his marriage to another widow his age. Kesa, her grandson, is selfishly pleased to see Orin die. Around them, a family of thieves is dealt with harshly, while an elderly man, over 70 years old, scrounges for food after his son has cast him out.
