The Battle of the River Plate

Early in World War II, the Royal Navy was fighting very hard to keep the Atlantic convoy routes open and the British Isles well-stocked with food and other goods. It was very dangerous for the many surface and commerce raiders that had slipped out of German waters just before war broke out. As long as they were coming from an axis cargo ship or a tanker, they mostly hit and sank merchant ships. They could strike anywhere and everywhere. There was a powerful "pocket battleship" with 11 inch guns called the "Admiral Graf Spee." This is the story of how three Royal Navy cruisers with 6 and 8 inch guns took on this powerful "pocket battleship."
