Jim McKay, a wealthy retired sea captain, arrives across the great expanse of the American West to marry Pat Terrill. McKay's principles and way of life are unknown to the ranchers, and ranch foreman Steve Leech takes an instant disliking to him. Pat is spoilt and self-centered, and her affluent father, Major Henry Terrill, controls her. The Major is engaged in a brutal civil war with a clan commanded by Rufus Hannassey over watering rights for livestock.
